          CHETUMAL

Chetumal Bay is a perfect backdrop for the capital of the state. Take a boat or yacht trip along its shores for a panoramic view of some of the city's monuments, such as City Hall, the State Congress building, the lighthouse and the statues of the fisherman and manatee.

Chetumal Bay is part of the recently declared Manatee Sanctuary, established to protect Mexico's largest surviving population of this aquatic mammal. More likely than not, this but timid animal was the mythical siren that early Spanish mariners claimed to have seen during their voyages to the New World.

On a boat or kayak trip through Chetumal Bay and interconnecting backwaters like Guerrero Lagoon, you might catch a glimpse of the threatened manatee, turtles, cocodriles and a variety of birds including herons, egrets, storks, ibises, spoonbills, frigate birds, kingsfhisers and ospreys. There are several ports of call along the shores of the bay worth a visit. Calderitas is a popular bathing spot with several good seafood restaurants and Isla Tamalcab is a jungle - covered island lined with white beaches where the clear offshore waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Local boatmen will ferry you there for the day but there for the day but there are no facilities so take a picnic.

OXTANKAH

About nine miles (15 kms.) from Chetumal, down a dirt road from Calderitas is Oxtankah. This Mayan archaeological site dates back to the Classic period and consists of two groups of low-platformed buildings. The ruins of a colonial church can also be found nearby. Excavations are currently underway at the site. It's a good idea to take water, insect repellent and suitable clothing for this jungle excursion.

Closest city: Chetumal Getting there: Take the dirt track from Calderitas.

KOHUNLICH

To 60 km. Of Chetumal to the south of the state of Quintana Roo, is the old Mayan City of Kohunlich, that means, "place of cobrush". The time of its hubica splendor between the 350 and the 900 dc and the site is made up of a central area whose esplanade, according to the results thrown by the carried out archaeological studies, was covered with stucco and that served like floor to transport by gravity the water.

The building of the Large masks is most important of Kohunlich, and indeed takes that name by the presence from magnificent large masks with narigueras, eyes carved in star form and omamented with stucco, that represents a the deity of the sun, "Kinich Ahau". Some of these large masks are impressive, since to get to measure up to two meters of height.

MAJAHUAL

At 145 km. To the northwest of Chetumal, traveling by the highway the leads to Cheek Port and turning aside themselves by Coffee plantation, it is arrived at Majahual, a small port of fishermen that has become instead of summering. Here it exists a club of hunting, shot and fhises. To meters of this beach a reef (considered like the second greatest one of the world, single surpassed by the one of Australia)  extends towards the south.

Over the last few decades, the Mexican Caribbean has become the favorite destination of both tourists and investors from all over the world. In its 27-year existence, Cancun has emerged as the area's most popular development, with over 2.5 million visitors annually.

This same vision is now being applied to the southem part of Cancun's home state of Quintana Roo. Which is witnessing the birth of the most ambitious tourist development of the `90`s:

COSTA MAYA is located along the southernmost 131 kms. Of the coast of Quintana Roo, on the Eastern Shore of the Yucatan Peninsula, and just 12 kms. From the cayes of Belize. Its defined boundaries are North: Bay of Espiritu Santo East: Caribbean Sea South: Belize West: Sian Ka´an Biosphere.

KINICHNA

Hardly to 2.5 km. To the north of Dzibanché is Kinichná Mayan word that in means " house of the sun". The possibility that has been considered this site comprised of Dzibanché, since keeps the same architectonic characteristics, but own recognition due to the importance of its buildings occurred him and to the finding of the great Acropolis, whose monumental size and perfect symmetry are impressive.

This Acropolis has dated in Classic means and it is characterized to have three architectonic levels all with temples and stairs in line, emphasizing the last one since the assembly with two ends a superior temple of crujías with vaults and stucco decorations.

They complement to Dzibanché and Kinichná two assemblies more, Tutil and the Central Complex. These have not been explored to depth, but in appearance they present/display characteristics similar to the other two previous ones reason why it is probable, that closely they were communicated at last times.
